Dental X-rays are a crucial diagnostic tool in modern dentistry, providing detailed images of a patient's teeth, bones, and surrounding soft tissues. These images help dentists detect a variety of issues, such as cavities, bone loss, and infections that might not be visible during a standard visual examination. By offering a clearer picture of the dental structure, X-rays assist in the formulation of accurate treatment plans and preventive measures.

There are several types of dental X-rays, including bitewing, periapical, and panoramic X-rays, each serving a specific purpose. Bitewing X-rays are commonly used to identify decay between teeth, while periapical X-rays provide a view of the entire tooth, from crown to root. Panoramic X-rays, on the other hand, capture the entire mouth in one image, giving a broad overview of the jaw and surrounding structures. Despite the minimal exposure to radiation, protective measures such as lead aprons and thyroid collars are used to ensure patient safety. With advancements in digital X-ray technology, the process has become quicker, and more efficient, and offers lower radiation doses compared to traditional film X-rays.
